BENEFITS FOR THE MENTOR
(High School Mentor/ Player Coach to 11u Group)
Mastery through Mentorship
Teaching is a powerful cognitive process that helps a player reach a higher level of understanding. A learned skillset applicable beyond the field.
Deconstruction (Analysis): To teach a skill, a player must break it down into its fundamental components. This forces them to consciously consider the mechanics they might normally execute automatically.
Mental Modeling (Evaluation): By observing another player, the teacher must evaluate what is causing a particular issue. This process develops a deeper understanding of the skill and how to troubleshoot problems.
Creative Adaptation (Synthesis): Different learners respond to different approaches. A teacher must be able to create new analogies, drills, or explanations on the fly to help a specific individual understand. This ability to repackage knowledge to solve a problem is a key aspect of synthesis.
Why the Teacher Becomes a Better Player
Reinforced Understanding: Explaining the principles behind a skill repeatedly reinforces the teacher's own understanding and muscle memory.
Increased Self-Awareness: It can be easier to spot mistakes in others than in oneself. By identifying an issue in another player, the teacher becomes more attuned to that potential mistake in their own performance.
Enhanced Communication and Leadership: Teaching requires clear communication, patience, and leadership skills. Developing these abilities can help a player manage pressure and even "coach themselves" during challenging situations in their own game. A coach’s dream player!
